Three Lakes Park in Richmond

When I was in Richmond for the Craftsmen’s Classic Art & Craft show in early November, I made a couple of trips to Three Lakes Park. It’s a very nice little park – with three lakes and a trail that goes around the lakes. Lots of interesting things to photograph in a pretty small area. In other words – a perfect place to visit after setting up my booth for the show – and before the show on Sunday morning.

In addition to the Hearts A Bursting photos that I posted a few days ago, I took several other photos that I’m pretty happy with at Three Lakes Park. Here are a few of them

Some orange leaves on a branch hanging over one of the lakes

Some incredible red sumac leaves and berries

Some wonderful green and red leaves lit up by the sun

Red & green leaves in the same area – in the shade

These might be the leaves of a sweetgum tree - I loved the leaves in shades of pink and purple – with a few yellow ones on the same tree.

Three Lakes Park is a wonderful spot for a photowalk. I hope to return to the park in the spring when I’m next in Richmond for a show. I’m hoping my visit will coincide with the spring wildflowers.

Hearts A Bursting – Euonymus americanus

Last week I took a couple of walks through Three Lakes Park in Richmond. On both trips, I photographed an absolutley fascinating berry. It had several bright red berries and a bright pink textured husk. I took several photographs of it – and had no idea on how to identify it. Fortuneately, a couple of my friends on twitter (scgardeningnews and lyndacd) were able to identify it as Hearts a Bursting or Strawberry Bush (Euonymus americanus).

The Hearts A Bursting was a fun find on my walk and I really appreciate the help from my twitter friends who provided the identification. I’ll post some of my other photos from Three Lakes Park in a few days.

A Walk in my Neighborhood

Yesterday morning, I took a walk in my neighborhood with my camera. I’d noticed that there were lots of trees with wonderfully colored leaves on them – so I decided to head out an photograph some of them. Here are a few of the leaves I photographed.

And finally three photos of the leaves on the same tree. I was fascinated by how many different colors of leaves there were in one area of just one tree.

Pink Asiatic Lilies

I was looking back at some of the flower photos I’ve taken this year – and realized that there were several photos of various Asiatic Lilies that I’ve never gotten around to posting. Thojen Toad Lilies

Not long ago, I discovered a couple of types of Toad Lilies at Green Spring Gardens. About a week later, I was photographing at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond and found another variety of toad lily – the Thojen Toad Lily (tricyrtis).

Like the other toad lilies I’ve photographed – the structure of the flowers of the Thojen Toad Lily is incredible. Here’s a close up view of one of the blossoms to give you a sense of amazing structure.

And here are a couple of photographs of a cluster of Thojen Toad Liles growing along a stem.

I found the Thojen Toad Lilies along the Woodland Walk in early October. There were several of the toad lilies growing in the area. So if you’re at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in the early fall – be sure to keep an eye out for the Thojen Toad Lileis.

Queen Anne’s Lace – Daucus carota

Last week, I spent a morning photographing at Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge outside of Rock Hall, Maryland. I wasn’t sure what to expect at this time of year. I ended up having a wonderful time – photographing some colorful leaves and several flowers. One of the wildflowers I photographed was Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus carota). I’ve been wanting to photograph Queen Anne’s Lace for a while – just hadn’t found the right plant in the right light. On Friday morning, I found it.

I only spotted this one Queen Anne’s Lace plant still flowering along the Bayview-Butterfly Trail. But it was in a perfect location, on an overcast day. So I spent about 30 minutes photographing the plant from different angles.

My first photos were from above – a typical angle for photographing Queen Anne’s Lace.

As I was photographing it from above, I noticed just how detailed and intricate the flower of the Queen Anne’s Lace really is. So I decided to try a few closer in photos – from a few different angles. I’m really happy with some of the photos I took – they really show the intricate beauty of the Queen Anne’s Lace.

Now that I’ve taken a closer look at Queen Anne’s Lace – I’ll definitely be looking for more of it photograph next year.
