Turk’s Cap Lily – July 2010 Photo of the Month

Turk's Cap Lily - lilium superbum

Turk’s Cap Lily (c) 2009 Patty Hankins

Last summer I spent a week photographing wildflowers along the Blue Ridge Parkway and at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was my first opportunity to photograph the summer-blooming mountain wildflowers. I knew that one of the flowers I really wanted to get a great photograph of was the Turk’s Cap Lily.

So during my trip I took several hundred photos of Turk’s Cap Lilies. This one is my favorite. I love the way the flower stands out against the dark background of the trees behind it. I really wanted to show off the green star in the center of the Turk’s Cap Lily. I photographed this wildflower on the trail to the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower on the Blue Ridge Parkway south of Asheville, North Carolina.
