Washington DC Cherry Blossoms – 2006

Every spring, Bill and I make at least one (and sometimes several) trips to the Tidal Basin to photograph the Cherry Blossoms. We never know what to expect.

In 2006, peak bloom was much later than usual. In fact, it came after the end of the annual cherry blossom festival. We hoped this meant that we could photograph the Jefferson Memorial without the festival stage on the front steps. It turns out, we could get the Memorial without the stage – but with all the scaffolding from construction and repair projects, we ended up taking photos of just about everything except the Jefferson Memorial.

There are many species of Cherry Trees that bloom in Washington, DC each year. Most of the trees around the Tidal Basin are Yoshino Cherry Trees. This is the type of trees that made up the original gift of cherry trees from Japan to the United States.

This is probably my favorite photograph of the cherry blossoms I’ve ever taken. I just love the pinks of the blossoms with blues of the sky and water. For me – this is what spring in Washington, DC looks like.
